Benton S. Gatlin, longtime resident of Blacksburg, VA and most recently Martinsville, VA passed away on Tuesday, March 22, 2011, at his home after a long illness. He was born in Giles County, Tennessee to Berry B. and Martha Isabelle (Mattie Bell) Gatlin. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters Annie Putman and Amy Steelman, brother Eugene Gatlin, and nephew Mickey Putman. Mr. Gatlin proudly served two tours of duty with the U. S. Navy. He was retired from Belk after a lifetime in retail business. During his many years in Blacksburg, Virginia, he served as a mentor to many Virginia Tech business students. He was a longtime member of Blacksburg United Methodist Church where he served many happy years as an usher. During its early years, Gatlin served as a volunteer and co-chairman of the Montgomery County Christmas Store. Survivors include his wife of thirty-three years, Pamela Pace Gatlin, of the home, niece Betsy Towry and husband Jerry of Fayetteville, TN, nephew Ben Putman and wife Linda of Lewisburg, TN, and nephew David Putman of Fayetteville, TN.
