BELLE SMITH PHILLIPS COPE

Belle Smith Phillips Cope, 86 passed away at home after a short illness surrounded by loving family on January 29, 2016. She was born on September 2, 1930 in Houston, Texas to Vernon Earl Smith and Annie Leiala Mathews. She attended school in Houston, Texas and graduated from Phyllis Wheatley High School. She attended and graduated from Texas Southern University in Houston, Texas.

Belle was baptized at an early age at St. Peter Claver Catholic Church in Houston, Texas. Later she joined Calvary Baptist Missionary Baptist Church, Salt Lake City, Utah and was baptized and remained a member until her death.

Belle was married to Andrew Phillips and to this union three children were born: Antoinette Lynn, Andrew Wayne and Rosalynn Ruth Phillips. Andrew Phillips preceded her in death. Belle later married Donald L. Cope of Ogden, Utah who preceded her in death in 2008.

Her professional life included many endeavors, she served as Director of Human Resources for Special Projects at Hughes Aircraft, Los Angeles, California until retiring. Upon relocating to Ogden, Utah she went on to work as a Supervisor at the Clearfield Job Corps Center until she retired.

Belle enjoyed traveling, interior decorating and was an avid shopper. She loved to collect porcelain figures and antiques. She always loved to entertain family and friends and she kept her doors open to old and new friends.

Belle Cope was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Salt Lake City, where she served on the Deaconess Board. She was a charter member of the “Sophisticated Queen Bees” chapter of the The Red Hat Society and served a Vice Queen Mother. Belle was a member of The Eastern Star Society and the Elks and served in various leadership positions.

Belle is survived by her loving daughter, Rosalynn Haywood of Ogden, Utah. Step sons, Marvin Phillips of Houston Texas and Marcell (Janair)Cope of Ogden , Utah. Six grandchildren include Stephanie Goody, Jennifer and Jason Goody of Los Angelas,
California. Amber Peters Floyd, Las Vegas, Nevada, Leontre Andrew Hill, Ogden, Utah. Six great grandchildren and other relatives.

She is preceded in death by her parents Vernon Smith and Annie Matthews, husband Donald L. Cope, daughter Antoinette Goody, Son Wayne Andrew Phillips and cousin Eva Mae Albert.

The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation and thanks to Alpha Hospice. Belle was blessed to have very special people in her life that included many loving and caring friends. Belle Cope was a special lady that lived and loved life by doing it “Her Way”.
