Barbara Joyce Pierce, 84 of Moberly, went to be with her Heavenly Father on May 7, 2021, after struggling with complications of Dementia for several years and to stay ahead of Colon Cancer. She has gone to a grand reunion with her family.
She was born May 28, 1936, in Craig, MO to Irvin Joseph and Carrie Belle (Miller) Foster, and grew up living near the Missouri River between Craig, MO, and Furman, Iowa with two younger sisters. Her mother passed away on December 4, 1949, when Barbara was only 12 years old. She helped her father raise her two younger sisters, Clara Rose, and Janice Joanne Foster.
Barbara graduated from Craig High school in 1953. Then her father passed away on July 28, 1954, when Barbara was 17 years old.
She married Glen D Pierce on February 19, 1955, and Glen volunteered for the draft into the U.S. Army in 1955. Barbara spent the next several years following Glen around the world with his military career. They had three children by October 1958 when they took her two younger sisters to raise. The eldest sister, Rose, lived with them a little over a year before she married a military man and moved to Georgia. Glen and Barbara had to adopt the youngest sister, Janice, in order to get her admitted to an American School when Glen was assigned to Germany in 1958. They lived in Germany a little over four years. They returned to Fort Hood, Texas, in 1963 where Glen graduated from Officer Candidate School in 1965 and was assigned to Korea upon his graduation. Barbara moved back to Craig, MO when Glen was stationed in Korea. She then moved to Fort Leonard Wood, MO when Glen returned in 1966. Barbara moved to Fort Sill when Glen was assigned to attend the Officer Advanced Course in 1968. They purchased a home in Lawton, Oklahoma in 1968 with the intent of retiring at Fort Sill. Glen was assigned to Vietnam in January 1969 after he graduated from the Officers Advanced Course. Barbara and her family stayed in Lawton, Oklahoma while Glen was stationed in Vietnam. Glen returned to Fort Sill in January 1970. When he returned from Vietnam and after he retired from the U.S. Army in 1975 they moved to Moberly, Missouri.
Barbara joined the First Baptist Church of Moberly and was very active in Women on Missions. She was deeply loved in her Church activities and received a 2nd place trophy in 2002 for her quilt submitted for auction at the Missouri Baptist Children’s Home in Bridgeton, Missouri. Barbara enjoyed her family and her two grandsons. She was most happy when she was helping her youngest daughter, Carrie Embree, raise the two grandsons, Bradley, and Corey Embree.
Tragedy began for Barbara in 1999 when she lost her oldest daughter Glenda Jean Strange to Cancer. Between 1999 and 2002 Barbara lost a son, Patrick, a daughter, Carrie Gail Embree, and her adopted daughter, Janice Joanne to Cancer. Life has not been easy for Barbara. Glen hired in-home help so that they could stay in their home as long as possible. Barbara and Glen were very happy together again in their own home. She is survived by her husband Glen, a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Camille Pierce of Moberly, 2 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren other relatives, and friends.
