Barbara K.

Born Barbara Mae Kitchen in Philadelphia, PA, Barbara grew up in Southington, CT and graduated from Southington High School. Barbara was a cheerleader, but it was her beautiful soprano voice that led Barbara to a lifetime of joyous singing in many choirs and other choral groups. She graduated from Mount Ida College near Boston, did medical secretarial work and later became one of the nation’s first Ultrasound technicians in the early 1960’s. While working at Methodist Hospital in Houston, TX; Barbara met her future husband Norm at a church group aptly named the Saints and Sinners Club. Norm, busy at NASA’s Johnson Space Center during the 60’s, gladly acknowledges that Barbara was the “Saint” throughout their 56-year marriage. Son Peter Christian joined in 1967 and daughter Jennifer Joelle in 1970.

Barbara was predeceased by parents George and Naomi Kitchen, sister Katherine Calano, brother George Kitchen, Jr and wife Gail, sister-in-law Mary Etta Andrews, brothers-in-law Reginald Robertson and Robert Robertson, and nephew Michael Robertson. Barbara is survived by Norm, son Peter and wife Maria Miccio Robertson, daughter Jennifer Robertson, grandsons Zach (fiancée Erin Hedges) and Josh, brothers-in-law Leon Calano, Carl Robertson and wife Zina; cousins Ethel Miller, Nancy Kohler and Larry Kitchen; sister-in-law Sheila Robertson; nephews Stephen Robertson, David Kitchen and wife Kim; nieces Debra Kitchen, Andrea Steflano and wife Valerie, Diane Calano and wife Sherry, Rose Marie Sanford, Lynda Nash, Mary Campbell; and many grand nieces and nephews.

The Kitchen, Robertson, and Calano families gratefully thank Barbara’s wonderful Care Team at WakeMed Hospital Raleigh, who fought for Barbara, then assured a merciful, peaceful final passage while comforting several family members by her side. Her many wonderful friends and honored members of Daughters of the King are with her in thought and prayer. Barbara’s fellow volunteers at food pantries and Kingston Hospital, NY will always be honored in her remembrance.

Until we meet again, our beautiful, sweet, strong angel as you join the greatest choir of all!
