Barbara E. Rogers, 87 years, of Springfield, IL and formerly of Jacksonville, IL died January 18, 2007 at Lewis Memorial Christian Village in Springfield.
She was born May 27, 1919 in Abingdon, IL, the daughter of Harrison L. And Vada Emma Famulener Rogers.
She is survived by several cousins and three God-children and their families with whom she has enjoyed a loving relationship. She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant sister, and an infant brother. During many years of close friendship with Dean Donald Eldred, Miss Rogers developed warm friendships with scores of Illinois College alumni. She and Dean Eldred were long-time travel companions
Miss Rogers attended various California and Knox County, IL public schools and graduated from Abingdon, IL High School. She later received both AB and MA degrees from MacMurray College in Jacksonville. She received her deaf teaching training at the Clarke School for the Deaf in North Hampton, MA. She also briefly attended the University of Illinois, Northwestern University, and the University of California at Berkeley.
Miss Rogers taught at the Iowa School for the Deaf, the Illinois School for the Deaf, the California Schools for the Deaf in both Berkeley and Riverside, CA. She was later employed as a travel agent for Thrift Travel Agency in Jacksonville. During her years as a travel agent, she traveled to many far-distant places including two round-the-world trips.
A 50 year member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Jacksonville, she also was a member of the Adah Robinson Chapter #276 Order of Eastern Star, Delta Kappa Gamma, and Business and Professional Women. Miss Rogers was proud of her graduation form the Citizens Police Academy of Jacksonville.
Wherever Miss Rogers went, she met many members of the deaf community with whom she had established an ongoing life-connection. She was often called upon to interpret for the deaf in various community and church services.
Miss Rogers relocated to Springfield during 2003, residing at the Illinois Presbyterian Retirement Home.
