Barbara Anne Cornish Evans, age 74, of Rome, passed away on Tuesday, November 27, with her loving family by her side.
Barbara was born on June 13, 1938, a daughter of Lyle and Anna Sobik Cornish. She attended Rome Free Academy and graduated in 1955. Upon graduating from RFA, she attended the University at Albany and earned her Master’s degree in Library Sciences.
Barbara and her former husband, Bruce Evans, had two children, Shawn Evans and Laurie Evans Rice. She taught French in North Carolina at Camp Lejeune while Bruce was stationed there. In 1968, she started her career in the Oriskany Central School District. She taught second grade for five years and then became the high school librarian until her retirement in 1994.
Barbara is survived by a son and daughter in law, Shawn and Jan Evans of Conyers, GA; a daughter and son in law, Laurie and Scott Rice of Rome; two brothers and two sisters in law, David and Linda Cornish of Forestport and Kevin and Irene Cornish of New York Mills; three grandchildren, Michelle Levelle, Lindsay Bliss and Kurt Bliss; three great-grandchildren, Alexis Levelle, Riley Levelle and Chase Bliss; three special friends, MaryAnn Puglio, Lorraine Florczyk, and Edie Ruggiero and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her beloved companion of over 25 years, David Brand, who passed away in 2009.
