Audrey Mae Wendel Jack, 80, passed away peacefully at home on February 12, 2022, surrounded by family after a courageous fight with ovarian cancer. She was born on October 18, 1941, in South Bend, IN, the 13th and youngest child of the late Fred and Elvera (Lollman) Wendel. Audrey grew up in South Bend attending Holy Cross Grade School and St. Joseph High School (1959), where she made lifelong friends. She attended Indiana University at South Bend and worked at Midwest Producers Creameries as the assistant to the CEO.
On June 29, 1963, Audrey married James (Jim) E. Jack, who preceded her in death on July 4, 2011, at Sacred Heart Basilica at the University of Notre Dame. Jim’s career with The Associates brought the family to Dallas in 1976 where Audrey has lived for the past 46 years. Throughout the years, Audrey was extremely supportive of Jim’s work and board activities and was known for hosting legendary parties and tailgates at Notre Dame. When Audrey’s daughter, Christine was at Ursuline Academy, she recognized the need for the mothers to connect and support the girls and faculty resulting in starting the Ursuline Mothers’ Club which continues to thrive today.
To pursue a lifelong passion, in 1982, Audrey opened Select Treasures with her first store in Snider Plaza. Over the next 40 years, Audrey had several stores in the north Dallas area and a current space at the North Dallas Antique Mall which she has had for over 20 years. Audrey created a browsers’ paradise where time was well spent appreciating her carefully selected antiques, gifts, linens, quilts and accessories. Her customers truly treasured her kindness, helpfulness and knowledge.
Audrey loved to spend as much time as possible at the family’s lake house in Traverse City, Michigan where she enjoyed hosting friends and family and hunting for antiques and unique items to sell in her store. Audrey’s favorite room in the house was her kitchen where she was known to spend a lot of time creating delicious meals for her family and friends especially at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Her cookies, cakes and pies have brought much joy and comfort to all.
Audrey had a loving personality. Audrey lived out her Catholic faith in the motto “Love one another as I have loved you.” She made friends easily and loved to tell stories always in great detail. She was a loyal Notre Dame fan and attended every game she could. Along with Jim, she volunteered for the mentally challenged and her special needs nephew, Kevin, who had a special place in her heart. She was very devoted to her extended family and thoroughly enjoyed spending time with them. She will be missed by everyone who knew her.
Audrey is survived by her daughter Christine Jack and her son-in-law Philip Blum of Dallas, her two sisters, Suzanne R, Cleaver of Twp. Of Washington, N.J. and Lois (Patrick) M. Haynes of Dallas, and many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Along with her parents, Audrey was preceded in death by her five brothers, Fred, Bob, Jim, Dan and Jerry, and her five sisters, Pat Swanson, Doris Huber, Mary Jo Wolfe, Barbara Mitchell and Shirley Slabaugh.
