Arlene G. (Lyle) Mertel, 93, of Oglesby, passed away Wednesday, February 05, 2020 at Heritage Health, Peru.

Mrs. Mertel was born May 8, 1926 in Ottawa to Earl and Grace (Emrich) Lyle. She married Melvin H. Mertel on February 14, 1944 in Ottawa. Arlene and her husband were farmers, owned a corn shelling business and were owner/operators of Mertel Trucking for 30 years. Mrs. Mertel was the first female in LaSalle County to receive her chauffeur’s license. She enjoyed gardening, crafting, playing cards and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was also a lifetime member of the Midwest Trucker Association and a member of the Antique Car Club.

She is survived by her children, Nancy (Joe) Bernardoni of Utica, Kathy Koscielski of Oglesby and Charlene Heider of Peru; 13 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Melvin; a daughter, Barbara Sarver; a son, Henry Mertel; three sons-in-law, Art Sarver, Ed Koscielski and Ron Heider; a daughter-in-law, Kathy Mertel; three brothers and one sister.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Steve and Kevin Sarver, Lonnie Bernardoni, William and Joseph Michael, James and Melvin Mertel and Michael Heider. Honorary Pallbearers will be her granddaughters, Lori Herrling, LeeAnn Talty, Melissa Baize, Amber Heider and Angela Templeton.
