Salem-Arlene M. Hoopes, age 84, of Salem, died Sunday morning, October 19, 2014 of a brief illness. She was born July 14, 1930, the fourth child of the late Ray O. and Sarah E. (Handel) Grim. She grew up in Chatham and Homeworth and was a long time resident of Damascus. She was a loving farmer’s wife, mother, and grandmother who enjoyed being a homemaker, gardener, cook, and liked to restore old furniture. She was most happy when she was with her family playing pinochle. She loved being around people and welcomed anyone who came to her house. Arlene was a 1948 graduate of Goshen High School. Her husband, Glenn E. Hoopes, whom she married on August 25, 1951, preceded her in death October 4, 1989. Arlene was a rural mail carrier for the Salem Post Office for 20 years. She worked at the Damascus Life Stock Auction restaurant. She was a member of Lakeside Mothers Club, Columbiana County Farm Bureau, Damascus Historical Society, and Merry Widows Club. She was an assistant Girl Scout leader and served in the Damascus Friends Church nursery. Survivors include three sons, Clark (Marva) Hoopes of Canton, Brian (Susan) Hoopes of Cortland, and Ralph Hoopes of Salem; one daughter, Mary (Dean) Egli of Hartville, Ohio; one sister Mabel Keithley; four brothers, Bob, John, Paul, and Bill Grim, seven grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Louis, Lee, Roger and Grant Grim, and two sisters, Susan and Ruth Grim.
