ARLENE JANE (BORDEN) GANUNG, 84, longtime Deming resident passed away Friday, July 8, 2011 at Mimbres Memorial Nursing Home.

Arlene was born on July 30, 1926 to Matilda Hartman and Arthur Borden in Horseheads, New York. She was born in the era of driving horses to plow the farm and learned to work hard from an early age. Through her work on the farm, she established a taste for horseback riding, a love for animals and honed her green thumb. After having spent some time in a World War II Ammunitions Factory installing fuses to carrier warheads, Arlene obtained her Bachelors in Education and went on to become an English Teacher at Belen Jr. High School.

Through all of her avid activities and accomplishments, Arlene’s legacy is in her children. Her six children were instilled with a strong work ethic and sense of pride by their mom’s efforts and struggles as a single mother. The fact that she was able to keep all of her children clean, fed and out of trouble during a time when a single mother with six kids was unheard of and often resulted in the children being taken away from the home by children’s protective agencies. Although she often poked her children in the side, she would always come back with a grin that would let them know just how much she loved them.

Arlene is survived by three sons, Walter (Marsha) of Grand Prairie, TX, David (Kathy) of Union, OR and Frank (Jill) of Deming, NM; two daughters, Faye Sanders of Las Cruces and Mary (David) Sutherland of Sierra Vista, AZ; two brothers, Gale (Sara) Borden of Tustin, CA and Bruce Borden of Deming, NM; two sisters, Virginia Lines of Las Cruces, NM and Nancy Shumard of Canyon Country, CA; fourteen grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Robert J. Ganung, Jr. and two brothers, Jim and George Borden.
