Archie Jones, 91, of Vincennes, passed away Saturday morning at the home of his daughter at 3:35 AM. He was born April 20, 1922 in Leven Fife Shire, Scotland the son of John “Jackie” & Elizabeth Shanks Jones. When he was 1 year old, his family brought him to the United States and he was raised here. Upon the onset of WW II, he joined the U.S.
Army and he was given his U.S. citizenship during his service. He served in the 2nd corps, under General George S. Patton and General Omar Bradley. He served during the battle of the bulge and various campaigns that led to the defeat of Germany. During his service, he was part of the occupation troops who helped the survivors of Buchenwald Concentration Camp. He was proud of his duel citizenship and his service to the United States Army.
He was a Methodist, a member of the VFW, where he was a gold card member. He married Mary Ellen Richardville on July 18, 1942 and they made their lives together for 69 years until her death in 2011. He was one of twelve children. He is survived by his daughters, Sandra “Sandy” Crouch, and her husband Albert F. of Vincennes, Brenda Barley, and her husband, Morris of Washington, IN and Pamela Jane Smith and her husband John of Vincennes, IN. His grandchildren, Scott Crouch, Brad Crouch, Leslie Brown, Charles Dognaux, Jennifer Ludlow, Elizabeth Fisher, Sherry Beamon and Archie Smith. 16 great grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren.
He is also survived by his brothers, John Jones of Vincennes, Tom Jones of Vincennes and Bob Jones of Freelandville, IN and a sister, Robina Johnson of Vincennes. He will also be missed by his great number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary E. Jones, a great grandson, his parents, 3 brothers, George, Israel and Arthur, 4 sisters, Margaret, Elizabeth, Barbara and Mary.
