Anthony “Tony” Centofanti, 98, of Salem passed away at 7:01 a.m. Tuesday, October 30, 2012 at the Hospice House in Poland, Ohio. He was born January 3, 1914 in Sulmona, Italy, the son of the late Carlo and Santa Centofanti. Before moving to Salem, Mr. Centofanti was employed at Youngstown Sheet and Tube. He was a successful self employed businessman and retired after 30 years at Pittsburgh Foundry & Machine Shop. Tony was an active bowler for 45 years, winning the gold, silver and bronze Senior Olympic medals. In 1999 he and his wife, Mary were named Salem Senior Citizens of the Year and the Italian-American Club named them the Italian Citizens of the Year in 2009. Tony was a member of the St. Paul Catholic Church. He belonged to the Salem American Italian Club, Christopher Columbus, Italian Club of Alliance, United Commercial Travelers, and the Salem Senior Citizens. His many hobbies included gardening, hunting, fishing, traveling, and volunteer work. He leaves his wife of 73 years, Mary Argentina Centofanti; two daughters, Sandra Ann (Benjamin) Maxim of Gahanna, Ohio and Loretta Jean (Troy) Whitehurst of Concord, California; two grandsons, Benjamin Anthony (Dorothy) Maxim of Columbus and Edward Patrick Maxim of Columbus; and a great-granddaughter, Claudia M. Maxim. Three brothers, Dominic, Henry and Augustine Centofanti and a sister, Regina Leombruno preceded him in death.
