Anne Szopa, 70, passed away peacefully among family at her home in Muncie on Thursday, November 28, 2013. The daughter of the late Judge Mario and Jane Pieroni, she was born and raised in Muncie.
She attended Burris School and the College of Mount St. Joseph. In 1986 she earned her Ph.D. in Sociology from Ball State University. She became a devoted teacher and academic, holding positions first at Ball State and later at Indiana University East in Richmond. While at Ball State, she pioneered the addition of women’s studies to Ball State’s curriculum.
Anne was an avid collector of fruit jars, glass and antiques. She was a member of Jelly Jammers, a club devoted to preserving the history of glass jelly jars. She was also Treasurer of the Midwest Antique Fruit Jar & Bottle Club for many years.
She is survived by her partner Sue Wilson, her sons Christopher and Vincent, her brother John Pieroni and his wife Sue Anne, her sister Rita Pieroni DeBoth and husband Tim, her sister Mary Pieroni Harper, and four nieces and nephews.
