Anne Gibson Thompson Dr. Anne Gibson Thompson, 90, died Sunday evening, February 4, 2007, at her home in Harbert, Michigan.Anne was born August 6, 1916 in Three Oaks, Michigan to John P. and Mame (Riekert) Gibson. Her family owned and operated Gibson’s General Store in Lakeside, Michigan where Anne grew up. She graduated from Three Oaks High School in 1933, and earned her teaching certificate at Kalamazoo College.

She began her career in education as a teacher at Bridgman High School in 1937. During World War II, Anne served three years with the American Red Cross as a recreational worker with assignments in Fort Bliss, Texas; Roswell Air Force Base in New Mexico; and at a military hospital in Topeka, Kansas, for which she received a certificate signed by President Harry S. Truman “in recognition of meritorious personal service”. Following her service, Anne attended Indiana University, where she received her Masters Degree and earned her Doctorate in Education in 1951.

Her career included several college administrative positions, and it was while serving as Dean of Women at the State University of New York at Fredonia, she met Dr. Robert S. Thompson, Dean of the University. They married on March 2, 1957. Robert preceded her in death in 1964. Anne also served as Dean of Students at Northern Michigan University, Marquette, and as Senior Counselor at Eastern Michigan University, Ypsilanti, retiring in 1976.

She wintered in Florida, and returned to her home in Harbert during the summer months. Anne was a fan of all sports, and particularly enjoyed playing golf. She was also an excellent bridge player, an avid reader, and was a fine crossword and jigsaw puzzle-solver.Survivors include her sister, Harriette Gibson of Harbert; brother, Jack (Janice) Gibson of Harbert; sister-in-law, Betty Gibson of Lakeside; her many nieces and nephews, and stepson, Thomas L. Thompson. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Marilyn Gibson and Sally Jo Gibson; and brothers, John A., William H., and Harold J. Gibson.Complying with her request, there will be no visitation or services.
