Anne Eva Kippes was born in Sterling, CO on August 14, 1922. She was the fifth of seven children in the family of John Peter and Mary Kippes. The family lived at various farms in the Sterling area. At the age of eight, Anne joined the family in working in the sugar beet fields.
Anne married Joseph Schell on April 3, 1945 and lived in Atwood, CO where Joe worked at the Sterling grain elevator. Three children came along in the first five years of their marriage.
