ANNA MOSKWA Anna Olechowska Moskwa of Ridgefield, CT passed away peacefully on May 21st, 2013. She was 88 years of age. Her husband Tadeusz (Tad) Moskwa preceded her in 2005. Anna was born on June 24, 1924 in Lodz, Poland, to Jozef and Anna Olechowski. Anna lived a full albeit dramatic life. Her father was a Polish senator who had a senior role in counter-espionage against Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union before the outbreak of World War II. Following the German invasion of Poland on 1939, the family fled eastwards to evade the invading forces. Unfortunately, the Soviet Union invaded Poland shortly thereafter and Anna (then aged 15) and her parents were captured by the Soviet KGB (secret police). Anna’s father was sent to the Lubyanka prison in Moscow while both Anna and her mother were sent to internment camps in Siberia and Kazakhstan for two difficult years. In 1941, Anna made her way to Palestine where she completed her Polish high school education, attended the American University in Beirut, and went on to study pharmacy in Lebanon. Anna met childhood friend, Tad, in Cairo where he was stationed with the Royal Air Force. They went on to marry in London in 1947. In 1951, Anna moved with her son and husband to Northern Rhodesia (today Zambia) where her husband had a 30+ year career as a mining engineer with Anglo-American De Beers. During that time, Anna developed her gift as both a poet and painter and held numerous exhibitions of her classical art throughout the country. She also took an active interest in healthcare and education in the African bush. In 1982, Anna and her husband moved to Ridgefield, CT. She is survived by her son Richard and daughter-in-law Tina Moskwa of Ridgefield, granddaughter Valerie and husband Rik Knopp of Simpsonville, SC, as well as grandson Tad and granddaughter Ashlee both of Chicago. Anna is also survived by great-grandchildren Alyssa and Tyler Knopp of Simpsonville, SC.
