Andrew Angelo Barone, 89, of Twilight Drive, formerly of Donora, Pa., died at 6:30 p.m. Saturday (Feb. 10, 2007) at Riverside Village in Elkhart after to a brief illness.

He was born Feb. 19, 1917, in Donora, Pa., to Guiseppe and Vincenza (Amorosa) Barone. On Feb. 19, 1941, in Donora, he married Helen D. Shark. She died in July 1995 in Donora.

He is survived by one son, Joseph A. (Elizabeth) Barone Sr. of Elkhart; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by one son, Andrew J. “Butch” Barone; one granddaughter, Andrea “Andy” Barone; and two sisters, Mary Gunderson and Norma Delesrando.

Mr. Barone was a foreman in the open-hearth area at the Donora plant of U.S. Steel for more than 40 years, retiring in 1987. He then worked as a custodian in the Ringold School District for several years. He was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus Council 1043, both in Elkhart. While living in Donora, he had been a member of the Knights of Columbus Council since 1941 and was an honorary life member. He also served on the Donora School Board as a director from 1960 to 1966.

Mr. Barone was a member of the SOAR (Steelworkers Organization of Active Retirees) and the Greater Beneficiary Union District 999 in Pittsburgh, Pa. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II, and had been a member of American Legion Post 212 in Donora for 36 years. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed St. Louis Cardinal baseball, Notre Dame football and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
