Anabel C. McHugh was born on May 8, 1931 to Margaret Slavens Carey and Emerson Carey, Jr. in Hutchinson, Kansas and passed away at home in Denver, Colorado on December 25, 2017. Anabel grew up in Hutchinson, moving to Denver in 1939, where she attended Byers Junior High School and Randall School, graduating in 1949. From there she majored in American Studies at Smith College, graduating in 1953. Anabel moved back to Denver and while working for the Denver Dry Goods Company, met the love of her life, Jerry McHugh. They were married in Nov 1956. Jerry and Anabel lived in the same home in Crestmoor since May 1958 Anabel was a devoted and loving mother of five. Anabel and Jerry together had an active family life filled with their children’s sports and activities, travel and time at the family home in Breckenridge. This continued when the grandchildren arrived. In addition to the unconditional love for her family, Anabel had a passion and drive for helping those in need. This started with the Junior League of Denver and continued throughout her life. Anabel was a quiet and influential crusader for the many causes with which she was involved. Anabel was a behind-the-scenes Community Organizer long before it was fashionable. Her most passionate work for others was through Colorado I Have a Dream Foundation (CIHAD). Not only did she and Jerry help CIHAD financially, but Anabel was also very hands on and present in the lives of the CIHAD students. Jerry lovingly sponsored the 2014 CIHAD class, the Anabel McHugh Dreamer Class, in honor of his beloved wife. Anabel was a kind person, always finding the best in others and this continued throughout her life, even as she struggled with Alzheimers. The family would like to thank the caregivers who so lovingly took care of Anabel in the last years of her life: Anita Bunch, Mildred Mickens, Norberta Brown, Judy Maselli, Dr. Saba Gebremariam, Claudia Lantis, Cathy Bryant, and Priscilla Omegba Anabel is survived by her five children Jerry, Jr. (Stacy), Erin Gogolak (John), June McHugh (Tom Gould), Burke (Amy), and Chris (Susan); seventeen grandchildren and three great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by husband, Jerry McHugh, Sr., brothers Randolph S. Carey and Emerson Carey III, and parents Margaret Carey and Emerson Carey, Jr.
