Amy Avery Stowell
Amy Avery Stowell died peacefully at home, on Tuesday April 12, 2016. Amy was born October 15, 1924 to Ira and Bertha Avery in Salt Lake City, UT. She spent most of her childhood in the Milo, ID area. Her early school years were in Milo’s “Little White School House.” She went to Jr High School in Ucon, ID. It was when she went to Rigby High School that she met her sweetheart, Kay Stowell. They graduated together in 1942. He then went away to cadet school in July of 1943. She traveled with his mother on a bus to Wayne, Nebraska where they were married. She then followed him from base to base with other cadet wives, until he was shipped overseas. While he was in Italy flying transport planes in WWII, their first daughter, Saundra was born. While Kay was serving in the war Amy attended beauty school, receiving her cosmetology license. She had a beauty shop in her basement in Ammon, ID and later in No. Ogden, becoming the neighborhood hairdresser. Her clients became some of her closest friends.
They lived in the Idaho Falls, ID area for many years moving to Ogden in 1961.
Amy loved to write and had a real talent with words, writing poetry and stories. From 1982-1988 she wrote special interest stories for the Standard Examiner and from 2008-2011 she had a monthly column in the senior section of the Standard Examiner.
She and Kay were sealed in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple in 1946. She lived her life serving those around her. She held many callings in the LDS Church and she served as an ordinance worker in the Ogden Temple for many years. She and Kay served in the Leeds England Mission from 1988-1989, and in the Washington DC Temple from 1995-96. However, her most cherished calling was that of wife, mother, and grandmother. With her passing that will not end.
She is survived by her husband of 73 years, Kay Stowell; her daughter, Saundra (Lynn) Call; son, Lorin (Barbara) Stowell, and daughter, Lana (Randy) Mathis; 16 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents; 5 brothers, and 4 sisters; great-grandson Blair Glen Simmons; great-granddaughter Bella Camille Stowell and great-grandson in law, Sergeant Matthew Larsen.
She was valiant daughter of God and was loved by all who knew her.
