Durham Mrs. Alta May Powers Smith, 89, of Durham, died on Sunday, January 6, . Smith was born and raised in the Lowes Grove Community, to the late Gideon Ellis Powers and Beulah Hawkins Keith Powers. She was a homemaker and a member of the Bethesda Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Robert Smith,Sr. in is survived by her son, Fred R. Smith, Jr. of Durham; two daughters, Shirley Price and husband, Tommy of Durham and Rebecca Parker and husband, Ellis of Chocowinity, N.C.; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Powers; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
