Alma (Sugar) Coleman Ryan, 90, passed away on Wednesday, June 1, 2016 at home surrounded by her daughter and son-in-law. Alma was born in Richmond, VA on March 9, 1926. She was the daughter of the late Floyd Stevenson and the late Susie Williams. She was married to the late John Ryan.
She gave her dedication of over 50 years to Ebenezer Baptist Church, Providence, Rhode Island and was also a member of the Celestial Chorus for many years. She was the Illustrious Commandress of Constantine Court #8 Daughter of Isis and the Deputy of Isiserettes, Past Grand Worthy Matron and Head of Eastern Star Youth Group of Queen of Sheba #1 Order of Eastern Star, Mount Sinai Royal Court of Cyrenes, Past Loyal Lady Ruler of William A. Heathman Assembly #66 Order of Golden Circle. A member of St. Martin de Porres Senior Center and served on the St. Martin de Porres Guild. Alma also volunteered as a Bingo caller for many years as well as several different places.
She leaves behind 3 sons, John Ryan (JR) Rivers (Yvonne Mendoza) of Zebulon, NC; Charles (Joe) Rivers (Carolyn) of Richmond, VA; Jeffrey Ryan (Lisa) of Salem, MA and daughter, Bernadette Teasley (Ernest) of Providence, RI; stepdaughter, Francine (Teen) Morgan of Zebulon, NC; also she raised as her own, Deacon Althea Coleman; 23 grandchildren preceded in death by grandson, Terrance Teasley, 19 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren she is survived by her sister, Alice Hawkins of Richmond, VA; preceded in death by 3 brothers, Algie Coleman, Willie Williams and David Williams all of Richmond, VA and a host of nieces and nephews.
She will be dearly missed, but she is resting in the arms of her heavenly Saviour.
