Alice Hulka, age 92, formerly of Kaneville, Illinois, passed away Tuesday October 25, 2022, while residing at Willowbrooke Skilled Nursing at Magnolia Trace in Huntsville, Alabama.

Alice was born in 1930 in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of John and Margaret Schicht. In 1934 the family moved to Kaneville where John and Margaret established a poultry and egg business run with the help of their children. She graduated as valedictorian of her class of eight from Kaneville High School in 1948. She then graduated from Northern Illinois State Teachers College (currently Northern Illinois University) in 1951 with the degree Bachelor of Science in Education, and began a long teaching career, starting with Stockton High School, and then moving to York High School, Proviso East High School, Louise White Elementary, and Batavia High School, teaching biology, algebra, and her favorite, geometry. In 1955 she received the degree Master of Science in Education also from Northern Illinois State Teachers College. While at York she met Frank Hulka, an English teacher who had been a Seabee in the Pacific theater in the Second World War, and they were soon married, even though he was a White Sox fan. Alice convinced Frank, a city boy, to move way out to the country back to the big red brick house in Kaneville where she had grown up, and they promptly produced three children and lived happily for many years with her mother and many dogs and cats.

She is survived by one daughter, Margaret of Winder, Georgia; two sons, James (Judy) of Huntsville, Alabama, and John of New York City, New York; one stepson, Steve (Mary) of Phoenix, Arizona; three step grandchildren, five (and still counting!) step great grandchildren; and one brother, Richard Schicht of Champaign, Illinois. She is also survived by that big old red brick house in Kaneville she loved so much, which is once again home to a family with grandparents, kids, and dogs.

In addition to her husband, she is preceded in death by her parents, her brother John, her sister Frances, and her stepsister Helen. She will be interred next to Frank, and near her parents and sister Frances, in the Kaneville cemetery.
