Alfred “Al” Champy, 95, of Eutawville, South Carolina, passed away at home surrounded by close family on Sunday, July 2, 2023. Al was born to the late Gene and Mary Champy in Paterson, New Jersey. Al graduated from Eastside High School and went on to art school and became a well-known commercial artist in the tri-state area of New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. Al served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, where he was a staff sergeant, an artist for the company newsletter, and a chef.
Al and his loving wife, Miriam, moved to South Carolina in 2020 to live with their daughter. Al’s passion for wildlife and nature was demonstrated in many of his paintings. Al was also passionate about his dogs, feeding the birds, fishing, playing the organ, and singing.
He was an active member of several art societies in the Summerville, South Carolina area and won many awards for his paintings. Al’s artwork has been displayed at places such as municipal buildings and fairs in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, art galleries, restaurants, and office buildings in the Low Country area, as well as in Charleston Art & Design Magazine. He is also credited for creating and illustrating thousands of ‘First Day Covers’, which are sold and traded to stamp collectors internationally.
Al is survived by Miriam, his wife of almost 6 decades, and his daughter Cindy Lee Thorington (Rich) of Eutawville, South Carolina, son Bobby Champy (Cathy) of Stratford, New York, and son Ricky Champy (Chris) of Newberry Springs, CA, as well as 7 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him, especially for his witty sense of humor and amazing talent.
