Alexis C. “Mooka-Mook” Anderson, 4, of Elkhart, passed away at 11:42 p.m. Saturday, July 2, 2011, in the emergency department of Elkhart General Hospital. Her brother, Alex “Chunky” Anderson III, 6, also of Elkhart, died at 5:32 p.m. Monday, July 4, 2011, at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo, Mich. Both children died as a result of smoke inhalation from a house fire that destroyed their home.
Alexis was born June 8, 2007, and Alex III was born Oct. 29, 2004, and were the children of Alex and LaTanya M. (Chandler) Anderson II of Elkhart. Both children were also born in Elkhart.
Other survivors include a brother, (who was rescued from the fire with only minor injuries) Lexington M. “Sugar Bump” Anderson, at home; two sisters, Ramona L. “Nene” Chandler, at home, and Tanesha N. “Nesh” Anderson of Seymour; and grandmother Maggie N. (Stanley) Thompson of Seymour. An uncle, Jermaine Ford, survives as well, and is credited with saving the children’s brother, Lexington, from the fire.
Two grandmothers, Ramona L. Chandler and Helen Carver, preceded the children in death.
