Alexander H. Kounaris, dearly-loved husband of the late Effie (Lane) Kounaris, peacefully passed in his sleep on Friday, December 11, 2020. Born in New Britain, he spent most of his life in Connecticut, living first in Newington and then Wethersfield. In his later years, he wintered in Florida where he treasured sunny adventures with his wife of 55 years and later, with his longtime girlfriend, as well as with his daughters and friends. Unparalleled as a devoted husband and father, he was also an expansive friend to many, a dear uncle, and an adored and adoring ‘grandfather’. Generous, quick-witted and gregarious, he was, quite simply, a man who loved life. He cherished every today and will be forever remembered in every was extremely proud to be an American and would brook no discussion of America being anything less than the greatest country on earth. He served the country he loved so fiercely, honored to be a corporal in the United States Army Infantry, fighting in the frontlines during the Korean homage to his Greek heritage, Alexander was an Ahepean and a long-standing member of the church, which he served in the capacity of Church Treasurer for many years. Committed to both, the church and his ‘seniors’, Alex worked tirelessly as president of the church’s “Seniors” group, ensuring that group members enjoyed each of the many outings he painstakingly planned. After retiring from the family business, Connecticut Automatic Sales, Alex spent his days delighting in the closeness of his family, enjoying the company of his countless loyal friends, and, of course, rooting for his beloved New York Yankees. In joining his cherished wife somewhere in the great beyond, he leaves his doting, grief-stricken, but grateful, daughters; Cynthia Kounaris of Ft. Lauderdale, Adrian East of New York City, Allyson Kounaris of Newington and his adored ‘adopted‘ daughter, Janice Cox of Southington. He will be greatly missed by his girlfriend Trudy Stamos, his son-in-law Fred Cox, his cousins Ike and Chris Kounaris, his nieces Judy McVeigh, Eva Poulos, his nephew Bill Poulos and especially missed by his grandsons Bryan and Kevin Cox. He will be fondly remembered and remain in the hearts of those who call him “Nouno” or “Papou” – Madison, Christian, Carol, Janine, Alexia and EffieHe was his family’s hero, an endless source of support, strength and joy to friends and family alike. He will be missed by all who knew him and quickly came to love him.
