Alexander F. Croteau, 94, a longtime Upton resident, passed away on Sunday, March 27, 2011 at the Webster Manor Healthcare Center. His loving wife of 60 years, Irene (Robida) Croteau, died in 1999.

Mr. Croteau was born in Marlboro, NH, a son of the late Henry and Pamelia (Girouard) Croteau. He lived most of his life in Upton, where he was well known in the area for his beautiful gladiolus and perennial gardens. He was an active member of the NORCO Gladiolus Society who propagated the first miniature green gladiolus in the area, which he named “Irene’s Green.

Alex was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving stateside. He was an avid bowler and stamp collector, and a communicant of Holy Angels Parish.

He leaves one son, Leo Croteau of Douglas; two daughters, Anne LaVergne of Waldoboro, ME and Louise Williams of Dudley; a sister, Dorothy Francks of South Grafton; 6 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Robert, Louis, and Melvina Croteau, and Mabel Brodeur.
