Alexander Balint Nemeth, 87, died peacefully in Mattawan, Michigan on March 30, 2022. He was born on June 23, 1934, in Detroit, Michigan, one of 7 children of Alex and Irma (Mandy) Nemeth.

Al, as he is more commonly known, graduated from Southwestern High School in Detroit, MI (1952). He attended both Michigan State University and the University of Michigan. Al graduated from Kalamazoo Valley Community College with an Associates Degree in Applied Science.

A Korean War Veteran, Al was an Airman 1st Class in the United States Air Force, serving on Active Duty from 1954-1958. He spent most of his service in France and Germany. He was stationed at Ramstein Airbase, where he received a Good Conduct Medal. While overseas, Al played in the base softball league with his team winning the base championship in 1958. Al had the pleasure of being able to travel throughout Europe with notable visits to Paris and to the World’s Fair in Brussels.

Al met his future wife, Ann Fitzsimmons, RN, in May 1964 at Herrick Hospital in Tecumseh, MI. they were married on May 15, 1965, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Adrian, MI. They moved from Ann Arbor, MI to Portage, MI in May of 1966, where they have resided ever since. Al and Ann were charter and lifelong members of St. Catherine of Sienna Catholic Parish in Portage, MI.

Al worked in the Industrial Engineering department at the General Motors (Fisher Body) plant in Kalamazoo from 1966 until his retirement in 2004.

An avid soccer enthusiast, Al coached Portage area AYSO teams when his children were young. He, also, was a referee for the AYSO program in Portage, MI. Al spent 30 years volunteering with the Portage Northern High School’s Men’s and Women’s Soccer programs. He worked in the booth, keeping the scoreboard, and getting players on and off the field among other duties. He belonged to various bowling leagues his entire life. He also was in golf leagues with fellow employees at Fisher Body. Al enjoyed working/ gardening in the yard and visiting with neighbors, but his real passion belonged to working with Ancestry.com to develop the Nemeth/ Mandy family history.

Al is survived by his loving wife Ann (Fitzsimmons) Nemeth He also leaves behind three children: Michael (Lori) Nemeth of Portage, MI, Suzanne (Bruce Browning) Nemeth of Portage, MI and John Nemeth of Portage, MI, 6 grandchildren: Molly (Ron) Komdeur, Hannah (Grant) Meredith, Taylor (Matt) Mitchell, Adrianna Nemeth, Alex Nemeth and Lily Browning, along with 4 great-grandchildren. Al is also survived by 2 brothers: Paul (Nancy) Nemeth and Jim Nemeth, 1 sister, Barbara (Ray) Christiansen and 1 sister-in-law, Marcia Fitzsimmons and many nieces and nephews. Al was preceded in death by his parents Alex and Irma Nemeth, 2 sisters: Irma “Betty” Torres and Velma Vida, 1 brother, Leslie Nemeth, his In-laws, Dr F.J. and Mildred Fitzsimmons and 1 brother-in-law, Michael Fitzsimmons.

Al always tried his best at work, home, and play. His engaging spirit and sense of humor will be truly missed.
