Alberta Ruth Canfield Smith, age 85, of Taneytown, Maryland, died peacefully surrounded by the care of Carroll Hospice and her family on Friday evening, July 31, 2009 at her home.
Born July 28, 1924 in Cumberland, Md., she was the daughter of the late Arley C. and Edith Messenger Canfield. She was the beloved wife of 66 years to Charles H. Smith.
A graduate of Allegany High School, Alberta attended Catherine’s Business School and was employed by the Cumberland Credit Bureau, Celanese Corporation and Fairchild, Inc. at Hagerstown in the accounting offices.
She was a member of Cumberland Chapter OES #56 for 60 years, the Taneytown Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion and Ladies Auxiliary of the Littlestown Eagles. She also served on the Carroll Hospital Auxiliary Board and Carroll Lutheran Village Auxiliary. Alberta volunteered as a docent at the Taneytown History Museum, was a Past President of the Antrim Homemakers and The Silver Fancy Garden Club.
Surviving in addition to her husband, are sons, Mark William Smith and Charles “Rod” Smith and wife Pamela Holt Smith, all of Taneytown; grandson, Mark William Smith II and wife Kathy of Littlestown, PA; great-grandchildren, Bailey Ann and Hunter Smith; sister, Camilla C. Swenson and husband Douglas W. of Lawrence, Kansas; sister-in-law, Patricia G. Canfield of Canton, Ohio. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was predeceased by a brother, Arley B. Canfield.
