Albert F. Hems, 83

Troy Albert F. Hems, 83, died peacefully on July 6, 2004 at Eddy Memorial Geriatric Center.

Born in Troy, he was the son of the late Samuel Hems and Ida (Bott) Hems and husband of 58 years of Margaret Rogers Hems.

He was a graduate of Troy High School, Albany Business College and the graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University.

In 1941, he enlisted in the military and was discharged as a major in the Air Force.

Mr. Hems had a 42 year career in banking, beginning with the National City Bank of Troy, and following multiple mergers, retired from Fleet Bank in 1982. He also was a President of the Albany Institute of Banking and taught several courses.

Mr. Hems gave many hours of community service. He was a Scoutmaster in Center Brunswick and a member of the Uncle Sam Council. He was a board member of Troy Pee Wee hockey and enjoyed his time on the RPI rink as a referee.

The American Red Cross was another of his favorite organizations, and he served as Chairman of the Rensselaer County Chapter. He taught blood pressure courses and worked in blood pressure clinics in many senior centers. He also served on the board of the Blood Bank in Albany.

Following retirement, he became an active volunteer at Samaritan Hospital, working first in the emergency room for 7 years and then in the pharmacy until recently. He accumulated over 18,000 hours of service.

He was a member of the Center Brunswick United Methodist Church, and served as a teacher, youth fellowship leader and trustee. He was also a member of the Brunswick Lodge of Elks and was named ‘Man of the Year’ in 1982.

Survivors in addition to his wife include his daughter, Carol (Harold) Shippey of Warrensburg; his son, Paul R. Hems of Center Brunswick and his granddaughter, Danielle Shippey of Ballston Spa.
