Albert F. “Doc” or “Al” Bond, Jr., 80, died on April 15 at his home in Huntsville, AL. Born in Clarksburg, WV., he was preceded in death by his father and mother, A.F. “Sixty” Bond, and Bessie G. Bond. A veteran of military service in the US Army during the Korean War, Bond earned the A.B. and M.S. degrees in mathematics and physics from West Virginia University where he became a member of the Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity and a loyal Mountaineer for the rest of his life. He minored in art and was a talented painter. In addition, he pursued graduate studies at Washington University in St. Louis. A 1947 graduate of Clendenin High School, Clendenin, West Virginia, he excelled in basketball, art, mathematics and science and received the Bausch and Lomb award.

Bond was an expert in systems engineering and quality assurance, credited with more than 25 authoritative publications on this topic, and was a lecturer at Purdue and Stanford Universities and the Universities of Michigan and Texas. “Al” began his career at Goodyear Aircraft in Akron, Ohio, and moved to Bendix Systems, Ann Arbor, Michigan, before settling in Huntsville where his career included employment with Teledyne-Brown Engineering, Computer Sciences Corporation, Systems Development Corporation, and the Unisys Corporation. Among notable achievements was serving as program manager of the Battle Management/Command, Control, and Communications Algorithm Development, a test bed demonstrating the technical feasibility of real-time control of a “star wars” engagement. Survivors are his wife of 59 years Jane Harper Bond of Huntsville, AL., daughter, Beverly K. Bond of Nashville, TN., sons David Bond of Huntsville, Alabama, Mark Bond of Zephyrhills, Fl. , sister and brother-in-law, Ann Bond Smith and Luther V. Smith of Clendenin, WV. , sister-in-law Maxine Harper O’Dell of Charleston, WV., and eight nieces and nephews.
