Alan began his life long career in the auto industry while in high school working for Jerome Kohl at his garage in Hardy.  In 1957 he began working at Superior Motor Parts in Superior.  In 1959 he moved to Mankato KS to manage the new Motor Parts store.  He moved to Superior in 1973 to take over management of all the Superior Motor Stores in Superior, Fairbury, Mankato and Washington KS.  In 1987 he purchased the stores from Don Kronberg; he closed the out of town stores and continued to run the store in Superior until his retirement in 2002.

Alan enjoyed many leisure activities.  He bowled in a league in Superior for many years and was a member of Superior Country Club for more than 40 years.  He was awarded a Lifetime Membership by the Country Club in 2015.  He was a master gardener, growing potatoes, tomatoes and cucumbers that could have filled a semi-trailer.  His golfing buddies could always count on a weekly sack of garden goodies during the growing season except for 1 year.  In 2003 he tried a new weed control method on the potatoes that came to be known as “Round-up Potatoes”.  The entire crop was ruined but he learned his lesson and continued to grow potatoes for another ten years.
