With the deepest sorrow and amidst great love, respect, and treasured memories, the family of Alan Vingan announces his passing on July 14, 2022.

Alan’s loss is mourned by daughter Leslie Reiter, son Roy Vingan (partner, Susan Margolis), grandchildren Allison DiNapoli (husband, Mark) and Adam Reiter, Nikki (partner, Matt Margol), Perri (partner Josh Freilich), Emma and Isabelle Vingan, great-grandson Cameron Michael DiNapoli, and nephews, Howard and Harlan Vingan. He was predeceased by his beloved Jessie, brother and sister-in-law, Julian and Eleanor Vingan, and son-in-law, Michael Reiter – who was told on his wedding day – “you’re not a son-in-law, you’re a SON.” Alan’s loss is also felt deeply by many cousins and lifelong friends, Larry and Renee Lerner and Jay and Diane Simons, and many others who have predeceased him.

Alan hailed from Brooklyn, NY – born February 20, 1931 – and retained his signature ‘Brooklynese’ throughout his life. His childhood with his older brother, Julian, and parents Harry and Pearl (“Polly”) was typical – if not idyllic – for the times – city streets for playground time, interspersed with Summers in Atlantic City, NJ, and Cedarhurst, NY with his favorite cousins.

Alan was a great student, enjoying History and Math – and time on the basketball court most of all. A self-professed ‘athlete’ –he enjoyed recalling many favorite moments on the court, including participation in adult leagues years later. He served honorably in the U.S. Army Signal Corps, August 1953 – June 1955, able to secure deployment at Fort Wadsworth, Staten Island, NY as an Electronics Technician while his father was terminally ill. Though he had NO electronics training, he served his country in whatever capacity was needed.

Alan met the love of his life, Jessie Nachbar, in December 1955, and following a whirlwind courtship, married on August 12, 1956. Their life as a twosome changed quickly with the arrival of their first-born, Leslie – 16 months later, and a son, Roy – two years after that.

Alan wore the Dad and ‘Poppy’ mantle proudly – there could be none more devoted to watching his children and grandchildren develop and grow into the people they were to become. Though he would always credit his beloved Jessie with ‘raising them’ and diminish his own involvement, Dad’s influence is found in everything his children are and aspire to be. He was the kindest man you’d ever meet – a trusted advisor and Jessie’s ‘rock’ – a mensch in every sense who always put family first. A huge void remains where a patriarch has stood.

His family shares their sincere thanks for the loving and attentive care received by Calvary Hospice and Elder Care Nursing teams. They’re also grateful that their father has been able to enjoy a wonderful year at the Club in Briarcliff Manor, under the attentive management of Sara Humphreys and her team. This was HOME for him – and where he needed to be in his final days.
