August 7, 1920 – January 28, 2015

Remarks of Remembrance Agatha (Ah-GAY-tha) Mary Smolik Winter August 7, 1920 to January 28, 2015 Agatha Winter was raised in the farming and ranching community of Karnes City, TX where her parents, William and Lucy Smolik, were owners of ranch land and proprietors of the Smolik Meat Market. Agatha was the oldest of 4 children and was a loving sister to her brothers Bill, John, and George. As a young woman, Agatha came to San Antonio and lived downtown while earning credentials as a Registered Nurse at Santa Rosa Hospital. For several years, she was employed as an office nurse by Dr. Merton Minter. In 1949, Agatha married Chester Winter and had a very happy marriage of 62 years. During their marriage, Chester and Agatha worked in partnership to raise their family and build the family business, Winter Sewing Machine Company, in Victoria, TX. Their relationship was a true partnership of two very capable individuals who stepped out of traditional roles whenever necessary to benefit each other and the family. They took care of each other and called one another “Honey” and “Dear” all of their lives. Agatha was a caring mother to 3 children, James Neal, Suzanne Marie, and Beverly Ann. When her children reached school-age, Agatha returned to nursing. She chose the night shift, 11:00 pm to 7:00 am, so she could spend maximum time with her children before and after school. Agatha was employed at DeTar Memorial Hospital for 30 years and served as the Supervisor of the Nursing Staff on the night shift for many of those years.
