Afton Welker Mayes of Wilder, Idaho died peacefully at West Valley Medical Center on Monday, February 11th, 2008. Afton was born in Georgetown, Bear Lake County, Idaho on November 29th, 1918 to Albert Wesley Welker and Ethel Bacon Welker. When Afton was 14 years old the family moved from Georgetown to Meridian, Idaho where Afton received the balance of her elementary education. On May 25th, 1939 she married Carl Devere Mayes, a fellow graduate of Meridian High School. After World War II they moved to Pocatello, Idaho where Carl received his Pharmaceutical Degree. For many years Afton and Carl operated Carl’s Drugstore in Wilder, Idaho. Carl preceded Afton in death on March 14th, 1996. They are survived by three children: Michael Dean Mayes of Galveston, Texas; Susan Wortley of Talkeetna, Alaska; and Gregory Carl Mayes of Caldwell, Idaho. She leaves one living sister Barbara Greene of Boise, Idaho and a brother Eugene Welker of Nampa, Idaho.
