November 21, 1917 – October 28, 2011

Adele P. Slagle was born at Fortress Monroe, Virginia on November 21, 1917 to John Perkins and Annie Muldrow Perkins. Dell grew up in Alpine, Texas. She loved Alpine. She fondly remembered her years there and the dusty shopping trips to San Antonio and El Paso where they traveled at night in their unair-conditioned car. She graduated high school from the Hockaday School in Dallas and later graduated from the University of Oklahoma, where she was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority. Afterwards she attended Columbia University in New York, receiving a Masters Degree in music. She loved to sing and play the organ. Before World War II Dell moved to Midland, Texas with her husband, James Brooks. Mr. Brooks entered the Army Air Corps early in World War II and was killed in a training flight. Adele then joined the American Red Cross where she was trained as a Hospital Recreation Specialist. She was sent to the Pacific and spent the rest of the war working in field hospitals from New Guinea to the Philippines. After returning home to Midland, she remarried and moved to Scottsdale, Arizona. She thoroughly enjoyed Arizona and developed a great passion for sailing. She had a beautiful 26-foot sailboat. Dell loved to go to the lake, sail and sleep on the boat. She had no children of her own. At the age of 52, after the death of her husband, Warren Dahl, she became the guardian of her two great nephews, John and Chris Nichols. She was a wonderful mother, encouraging and supporting all of their endeavors. In 1976 Dell returned to Midland to care for her mother. She subsequently married Melvin Slagle and moved to Benbrook, Texas where she lived for 20 years. There she was actively involved in attending classes at the Tarrant County College where she was a Board Member for a number of years; she especially enjoyed the painting classes.
