On Thursday December 3rd 2020; Abeda(Hajira)Obaid Mohamed, 97, passed away peacefully in her home in Hadley, MA, surrounded by loved ones.
Abeda Mohamed, a graceful and accomplished woman devoted her life to her family, her community, and to the betterment of the lives of women and children across the globe. She believed in the importance to portray Islamic values through exemplary behavior, and to spread interfaith/intercultural understanding She joins her husband Obaidulla H. Mohammad, and son Arif Obaid Mohammad and leaves behind daughter Naz Mohamed, four grandchildren, Tania, Siddiq, Sehba and Hafiz, their spouses, and two great-grandchildren, Zara and Noah.
Born and educated in Calcutta, India, Abeda soon after marriage moved to London with her husband. In 1947, being in England during Pakistan’s independence, she helped establish the first Pakistani embassy in London.
Abeda took leadership roles in various social work organizations to improve the conditions of women and children in Pakistan; organized the first UNICEF Universal Children Day and was the local coordinator for the US Peace Corps.  
As a representative of Pakistan, Abeda attended various International symposiums in Greece and Japan., She attended the Ten Nations Leadership Grant Program/Social Welfare and Community Development sponsored by the US State Department. While living on assignment with husband in Saudi Arabia, she organized various UN sponsored events including UNICEF’s annual card fundraiser. On assignment in Accra, Ghana. she participated in local cultural activities. In 1983, they immigrated to Canada and settled in Winnipeg, where they become integral members of the city’s Muslim community. Abeda spent her last decade living with Naz, she quickly became an integral and respected elder of the local Muslim community and auntie/grandmother to all their friends.
