Zulema Galvan Cano

August 27, 1939 – February 23, 2022

Love can be defined as the most perfect emotion, and the love she experienced for her husband was manifested as one of her most profound emotional experiences in her lifetime that her heart broke when she lost him. Zulema Galvan Cano’s heart has been restored now as she has been eternally reunited with the only love she’s ever experienced with Eloy Cano, Sr.

Little did she know that when she was born on August 27, 1939, her life’s existence would evolve surrounded by love in every respect. Through their love, Zulema and Eloy enjoyed and loved each of their children beginning with a set of twins, Veronica Cano and Velma Cano Yzaguirre, then came Eloy Cano, Jr. (Melissa), Zelda Cano Quintanilla, and Liza Cano Avalos (Anthony).

Raising their children was Zulema’s most cherished blessing as she was the epitome of goodness as a mother to her children. Zulema was always involved in her children’s triumphs and otherwise, both as they grew up, and as they became adults raising their own families, and onward.

When her children were a bit older, Zulema worked at Sears for several years in the capacity of an administrative assistant. She was later the secretary for Harlingen CISD’s Vernon Middle School for many years up until the time she decided to retire. She then became more involved in some facets of community service through HCISD, which provided her added opportunity to see her grandchildren throughout the day; she loved her grandchildren and took every opportunity to be close to each of them while they were attending public schools in Harlingen. She also provided her volunteered service at the Veteran’s Administration offices in Harlingen and had a grand time each time she served.

Zulema later kept life as simplistic as possible, oftentimes spending time working on her yard and plants and continuing the tradition of baking treats as she did for years; those were soothing and calming traditions for her. Both provided her time to reflect on what a blessed life she lived. She also became even more involved with her faith and in the love of our Lord. She spent such great quality time with her friends, sisters, and cousins having lunch and coffee dates at different locations.

What was beautiful was the fact that during her battle with cancer many decades ago, Zulema brushed and styled a variety of wigs, and the blessing to all those 45 additional years was that as she realized a long and lasting life brushing and styling her own natural gray hair and was the most content in doing so.

Her health then began to deteriorate over the past several months and by her wishes, she was able to come home, a home where it all happened for her and her entire family. As only God knows, on February 23, 2022, He took her Home where she will eternally rest in the comforts of that much awaited peace.

The Cano family is comforted knowing Zulema is now reunited with her love, her honey, Eloy Cano, Sr., both in the presence of God and all her loved ones who have welcomed her Home.

Zulema was also blessed with her grandchildren, Elise, Vanessa, Christine, Raul III, Eloy Cano III, Marie, Sofia, Julia, Michael, Isaiah, Alexa, India, Salome, Jacob, Kenya, and Zayda . Her great-grandchildren, Jeremy, Mia, Liam, Ali, Roel, Gianna, Austin, Lexi, Phillip, Zeke, and Aleah.

Zulema’s siblings include Corina Gomez (Tony), Nora Garza (Rene +), Olga Valdez (Dul), Xavier Galvan (Carmen), and Zenia Galvan. Zulema’s life growing up with her parents, I.J. Galvan(+) and Genoveva Galvan(+), and her siblings, was also a blessing because the loving childhood provided Zulema with that sense of love she took with her as she lived her own life raising her own family.

We, the Cano Family, have experienced a life of extraordinary blessings having lived life as the children of Eloy Cano, Sr. and Zulema Galvan Cano. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has rendered their thoughts, prayers, vigils, and every consideration for the benefit of our family, especially Zulema’s siblings and Sonia Kemp of American Medical Home Health and Hospice.

We welcome you to join us in the celebration of Zulema’s life and thank you for your prayers.
