Zachary Scott Alston, 58, of Cañon City, passed away March 11, 2021 at his home in Cañon City. Zachary, who went by “Scott”, was born in Honolulu, Hawaii to Thomas and Janice Elston on March 14, 1962. Scott was a Navy brat who lived in various places across the country. He spent most of his childhood years growing up in Maryland and Virginia Beach, until his family moved to Florence, Colorado in 1975, where his parents purchased the Old Rocky Mountain Grocery Store. His father grew up in Colorado Springs and his mother grew up in Pueblo, so the move to Colorado was always referred to as “coming back home”.
Shortly after moving to Florence, Scott met his high school sweetheart and wife of 37 years. Scott and Sheilla got married in the summer of 1983 and bought their house in Cañon in December of 1984, where they raised their two children, Shalina and Zachary and still reside today.
Scott had many jobs throughout his life, working in skilled labor. He worked at Domtar for about 10 years until it closed its doors in 1990. For some years, he poured concrete before finding a place at the Holcim Cement plant, where he worked for 19 years, before leaving due to physical disabilities.
Outside of work, Scott was a big do-it-yourself type of man. He remodeled his own home multiple times, built his own two-car garage and created one of the most beautifully landscaped yards around. With his wide range of skills and a big heart that loved to lend a helping hand to others, Scott became known as the man to call for help.
Scott also had more than his fair share of hobbies, which helped him live life to the fullest. He enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing, hiking, family road trips, hosting events and BBQs at his home and even the occasional Roulette table.
Scott’s beautiful life wasn’t without hardships, though he always found a way to not only survive, but to come out on top, taking immense pride in his sobriety of 16 years from alcoholism. Scott was a loving husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle and cousin.
Scott is survived by his wife, Sheilla Alston; daughter, Shalina (Brandon) Barlow; son, Zachary K. Alston; sister, Sandra Lesher; granddaughters, Chelsea and Mackenzie; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Janice Alston; brother, Mark; sister, Cindy Prater; nephew, Christopher Prater; mother-in-law, Midge Walker; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
