William Patrick McCuan

William Patrick McCuan of Glenwood, Md and Naples, Florida passed away on Sunday, August 20, 2017. He was 75.
The son of Lee McCuan and LaRee Beverage McCuan Sandlin, Patrick was born in Oklahoma. Patrick held a Bachelors Degree in Psychology and two Masters Degrees in Education and Social Work Administration. His Ph.D. studies were in Management and Organizational Analysis. Patrick is a former Professor of Social Policy and Administrative Assistant to the Dean at the University of Maryland School of Social Work. He is the author of numerous publications on political social policy and organizational management.
Patrick was Chief Executive Officer of MDG Companies of Maryland, MDG Companies of West Virginia, MDG Companies of Naples, and K&M Development Corporation. The firms’ business lines included commercial and residential real estate development, as well as real estate management, multifaceted real estate investment, automotive, and horse farms. Patrick’s background included teaching, managing public affairs for numerous national associations, custom home building, commercial development (office and retail), and other various business enterprises.
He retired in 1985 as Chairman of the Board of the KMS Group, a Columbia based real estate development company which he founded. He formed MDG Companies in 1985. McCuan was also Chief Executive Officer of McCuan Homes, a custom residential building company that has won numerous awards for building and design excellence in Maryland and West Virginia.
Patrick was known in his community for his philanthropy and community engagement. He is past President of the Howard County Chamber of Commerce and the United Way Campaign in Howard County.
He served on the Board of Governors of St. Margaret’s School in Tappahannock, Virginia where together with his wife they funded the McCuan House, a dormitory. At the Howard Community College in Columbia, Maryland, the McCuans set up an endowment worth over $1 milliion, one of the largest in the college’s history. He also chaired the Concert Society of Maryland, and was a leader in the Maryland Center for the Performing Arts.
