Our beloved sister Winnifred Almira Doran–Brown was the third child born to Harold Doran and Essie Webster on June 4, 1941. She had a total of 14 siblings.
She attended St. Paul’s All Age Primary School in Manchester, Jamaica WI. In 1962, she became the proud mother of a devoted daughter Sandra. She pursued her nursing career at Kingston School of Nursing Kingston Public Hospital and graduated with a degree in general nursing in 1966. She worked as a nurse at the Black River Hospital in St. Elizabeth, and subsequently at the University of the West Indies Hospital in Kingston, Jamaica, WI where she attained certification in Midwifery in 1967. In 1968, she immigrated to New York and married Samuel Brown in the same year. This union produced their beloved son Garfield in 1969. In April of 1973 she suffered a tragic loss of her husband. Winnifred became a US citizen in February 1976. Winnie also attained degrees from Brooklyn College and St Joseph’s College. Winnifred, retired as a nursing supervisor from Kings County Hospital after 30 years and then being the consummate worker continued her career in nursing and retired from New York Presbyterian Hospital. Winnifred spent her retired years as an active participant at the Glenwood Senior Center.
Ms. Brown’s spiritual journey started in July 2009 when she was introduced to the Lenox Road Baptist Church (LRBC). She was an active member and volunteer at LRBC. Over time, she saw the need to make a total commitment to the Lord. In 2010 she was baptized. She loved going to Church, and helping where she could. She always looked to and took great pride in anything she had to do for the church. When stricken with illness, she never wavered and still wanted to be in Church.
As a single mother, Winnifred worked both fulltime and part-time nursing positions all while attending school and caring for her family. Winnifred was always supportive of her family and friends. She was instrumental in improving the lives of many of her relatives. She always made herself available to assist those in need whenever called upon. Winnifred will always be remembered for her loving kindness, and constantly giving of herself. Winnie was conscientious, hardworking, loyal and trustworthy. She was an excellent parent and role model. Winnifred left this world comforted by the fact that she had many family and friends that loved her dearly.
Winnifred Brown leaves to mourn and cherish her precious memories: Children -Sandra and Garfield: Grandchildren- Jenelle, Danielle, Cortney and Hailey: Great Grandchildren- Javard and Amber: Siblings, Kathleen, Linden, Anthony, Daisylin, Dorothy, Alfred, Alderman, Joan, Donna ,David ,Edward, and Basil: Son in Law Wayne and Daughter in Law Larraine: And a host of other relatives and friends.
