Fondly known as “Win or Winnie”

Served in the military from June 1943 to January 1946. He received a good conduct medal, American Theater Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon and World War II Victory Ribbon.

Winfred is survived by daughter, Linda Watson and son in law, Wayne Watson, Robert Cannaday and his fiancé’, Robin Popiolek, Janet Clayton and son-in law, Len Clayton.  He has three grandchildren: Jeannette Goodwin and her husband, David, Stephanie Clayton and her fiancé’, Shawn O’Meara, and Greg Clayton and his fiancé’, Rosa Montevago.  Winfred also has one great grandchild named Grace Helen Goodwin (Gigi).

Married Helen Ann Webster in 1948 and had three children: Linda, Robert (Bobby) and Janet.

Helen and Win lived on Wood Street for most of their married life.  Helen was born on a small island near Princess Ann, MD named Deal Island.

Win worked for about 5 years as a mechanic and 35 years as a truck driver.  He drove for many years to A & P grocery stores for Krill Trucking Company.  Krill was taken over by Mountainside and he retired in 1987.  He received many citations for safe driving.  During the last two years that he worked for Mountainside he also did the body and fender repairs on the trucks.  Also, Win and his buddy, Norman, worked doing body and fender repairs as a side job for many years.

After Helen passed away in 1989, Win would go to the Island and stay for most of the spring and summer months.  He loved being down there and working in his garden.  He used to bring up bushels of tomatoes, cucumbers, green peppers, cantaloupes and watermelons to give to friends and family and sometimes we would sell bushels of mixed produce at the American Legion.

Win was known for being “lucky”.  He played specific numbers weekly, and loved playing Keno.

In August of 2009, he was diagnosed with lung cancer.  Win had smoked for about 35 years but had not smoked for about 40 years.  He went through chemotherapy and radiation and was in remission for about 2 years.  In December of 2011, the doctors discovered the cancer had reared its ugly head again and he was starting to have chemotherapy again although less aggressive because of his age and loss of strength. He had his first chemo treatment on 1/11/2012 and passed away on 1/17/2012.
