Mr. Willis George Haugen, 85, of Newnan passed away Friday, November 28, 2014 at his home. He was born May 29, 1929, in Waterloo, Iowa to the late Willis Tillman Haugen and Bessie Souba Haugen. Will grew up in Waterloo, Iowa and was a 1947 graduate of West High School. He graduated from University of Northern Iowa and later earned a master’s degree at the University of Minnesota, where he also served as a member of the university’s faculty. He then served in the United States Navy as an intelligence officer, with the rank of Lieutenant, junior grade.

He was stationed on the USS Bayfield, and later at the Pentagon. Upon his discharge from the Navy, he earned his law degree from Harvard University in 1959. While attending Harvard, he also served on the faculty of Tufts University. Will practiced law for 45 years at the law firm of Sanders, Haugen & Sears. While in Newnan, he served on the board of directors of Newnan Hospital. He was on the board of directors of The Bank of Coweta, as well as the advisory committee of The Georgia Conservancy. He was one of the founders of The Heritage School, and served on its Board of Trustees.

He was a member of the Executive Committee of the Georgia State Democratic Party, and was appointed by Governor Carter to the first State Board of Human Resources. He was a member and president of the Newnan Rotary Club. He was a member of the Newnan Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Sanders Haugen; sons Walter S. Haugen of Newnan, Willis George (Jeanne) Haugen, Jr. of Columbus, Georgia; grandchildren, Victoria Russ Haugen, Charis Hunt Haugen, Clara Berry Haugen, Michaela Claire Haugen, Willis George Haugen, III and Edith Harris Haugen.
