Mr. Willie Lewis Swopes was born May 1, 1939 to the late Mr.  Wash and Alberta Brooks Swopes in Decatur, AL. He departed this life on October 10, 2017 at Decatur Morgan Hospital-DGH Campus in Decatur, AL.

He confessed Christ at an early age and joined Westside Missionary Baptist Church.

He attended the Decatur Negro High School. After leaving school, he enlisted in the United States Army. When he returned home he was united in marriage to Katie Long. He loved sports, especially golf. He won numerous local golf tournaments.

He was later united in marriage to Birda Mae Grays Swopes.

Mr. Swopes was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Barbara Ann Swoopes and Bessie Mae Robinson; three brothers, Leon Garth, Samuel Fletcher and Wash Swoopes, Jr.

He leaves behind his legacy: daughter, Veronica Eutsay and her son, Raymone of Huntsville, AL; sons, Winfred Swopes, Ronald (Vicki Sue) Swopes both of Decatur, Wendell (Miranda) Swopes and his son, Cornelius Swopes of Leighton, AL and Roderick (Danielle) Fletcher and his children, Makiah, Makeylean and Makayla of Decatur; Several children that he helped rear, Candies Fletcher, Rachel Grays and Shirley Jones; sister, Katie Sails of Decatur; brother, Frank Swoopes of Chattanooga, TN; special brother-in-law, Jimmy Rodgers; a host of grandchildren, family and friends.
