He received his formal education in the public schools system in Atlanta, GA, graduating from Booker T. Washington High School.

In 1942, Willie enlisted in the United States Navy. After completing his tour of duty in 1946, he enrolled at the prestigious Morehouse College with the intentions of becoming an attorney. While in the Navy, Willie served his country through three wars, World War II and the Korean and Vietnam Conflicts. His last assignment was at the Naval Fleet Training Center in San Diego, CA as a trainer for new recruits.

After an illustrious Navy career, Willie embarked on a second career with the Federal Government at North Island Naval Air Station.

While in the Navy, Willie met and married the love of his life, Susie M. Walker, on December 21, 1951. Their union was blessed with five beautiful children. In 2001, after fifty years of a celebrated marriage, Susie was called home to glory to be with the Lord.

Willie, a man of many hobbies and interest, greatly enjoyed boxing while in the Navy, crossword puzzles, watching sports, particularly football. His favorite teams were the San Diego Chargers and the Atlanta Falcons. He also enjoyed his role in helping to raise his grandchildren. Willie will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
