William George Guild, 83, of Williamsport, passed to his eternal rest on Saturday, March 12, 2011, at Valley View Nursing Center.
Born Oct. 17, 1927 in Williamsport, he was a son of Arthur R. and Edith Kyer Guild. He was a 1946 graduate of Williamsport High School. Upon his commencement, he enlisted in the United States Army and served in the occupation force in Italy near the end of World War II.
On his return, he studied electronics at Williamsport Technical Institute (now Penn College) and subsequently took over his father’s radio repair shop. For the next 45 years, he grew the business, Guild’s Radio & TV, through the age of television and into the era of satellite communication.
As a young man, Bill enjoyed hunting, fishing and farming at his summer home in Carsontown. In his later years he rode his motorcycle and bicycle, traveled and played golf.
Mr. Guild was a charter member of the Lycoming Creek Lion’s Club where he served in many capacities, including president and District 14G Governor. He was a past cubmaster of Pack 51 at Trinity United Methodist Church and was active on the board of the Carsontown Community Church.
Bill was a good friend and a helpful neighbor, attributes he modeled for his children and grandchildren. He passed on a plethora of life skills to his family.
Bill married Shirley McMurray in 1948, and they have been married for 63 years. The couple had four children, John (Sandra) of White Pine, Penny (deceased in infancy), James (Kathryn) of Watsontown, and Julie (Kent) Bittner of Williamsport.
“Poppy” thoroughly enjoyed his six grandchildren Elaine (Bill) Ulmer, David (Laura) Guild, Michael Weaver, Rebecca (Michael) Spirko, Christopher (Sharon) Guild, Gabrielle Guild and two great-grandchildren Morgan and Addison Ulmer.
He was predeceased by his parents, two brothers Jack and Robert Guild, and two sisters Mary Solomon and Shirley Hoover.
