New London – William V. Schaffhauser, Sr. 90, of Academy Point At Mystic and formerly of Norwich died peacefully January 20, 2013 at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital of respiratory illness complicated by Parkinsons Disease.
He was born in Norwich, March 1, 1922, the fifth son of the late Joseph and Anna (Knolmayer ) Schaffhauser. On April 23, 1949 he was married to Cecelia W asniewski at St. Andrew Church in Colchester. She passed away April 5, 1994. Mr. Schaffhauser graduated from the Norwich Free Academy 1940, the University of Connecticut 1950 and the Thames Valley Technical College 1966. He was employed as Chief Engineer at the Plastic Wire and Cable Corporation and retired from IMS Wire and Cable Company as Vice President of Engineering.
He was a World War II US Army Veteran serving in the 85th Infantry Division in Africa and Europe. Mr. Schaffhauser was a member of the Germania Lodge No. 11 in Norwich and a founding member of Pautipaug Country Club in Sprague. He was an avid golfer for over 70 years and scored three holes-in-one at Pautipaug. He was a communicant of Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Norwich where he served as a Eucharistic Minister and usher. Mr. Schaffhauser participated in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program as a tax preparer for many years and was a lifelong donor at Red Cross blood drives. He was also a long time member of the Norwich YMCA.
Six brothers, including Stephen J.B. Schaffhauser and Attorney Martin J. Schaffhauser of Norwich, predeceased him. He is survived by his three children John F. and wife Deborah Platt Schaffhauser of Storrs, CT, Margaret C. Schaffhauser of Fairbanks, Alaska, and William V. Schaffhauser Jr. of Lebanon, CT and granddaughter Elle C. Schaffhauser of Storrs, CT.
