William “Smokey” Robert Turner, age 63, of Mt. Ayr, Ind. passed away Friday, June 12, 2020 at Franciscan Health Hospital in Lafayette, Indiana.
He was born on January 1, 1957 in Rensselaer, Ind. to Harry and Norma (Brunton) Turner. Smokey attended North Newton High School and graduated with the Class of 1976. On June 4, 1978, in Rensselaer, Ind. he married Pam Minter. He was employed at Leggett and Platt, Inc., formerly Sealy Springs, for forty-two years. Smokey was a member of the Mt. Ayr Methodist Church. He served as a Mt. Ayr town board member for two terms. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, along with participating in a dartball league and bowling league. A true family man, he enjoyed going on family vacations and attending his grandchildren’s sporting and extracurricular events. At Christmas time, Smokey delighted family and friends by playing an authentic Santa Claus.
Smokey is survived by his loving wife, Pam, his children, Athena (Bill) Brown of Demotte, Ind. and Andrea (Paulie) Tyson of Lake Village, Ind., five grandchildren, Autumn, Chase, Drake, Davin and LeiLani. Also surviving are his siblings, Ida Mae (Mike) Winter of Rensselaer, Ind., Cheri (significant other, Russ Martin) Nabours of Mt. Ayr, Ind., Melanie (Don) Rusk of Rensselaer, Ind., and Cara Nesius (significant other, Scott Balch) of Rensselaer, Ind.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Norma.
