William Reed Townsend, age 90, of Milford, beloved husband of Lucy Gaeta Townsend, died Saturday August 6, 2011 at Milford Hospital. Born on August 22, 1920 in Bridgeport, CT, he was the son of the late William and Marion Reed Townsend.
William proudly served in the US Navy during WWII. He served as a machinist’s mate First Class with the 26th Construction Battalion Engineers (CB’s) in the Pacific Theater, most importantly in the Battle of Guadalcanal earning the Asiatic Pacific ribbon, two stars in the American theater and the Victory Medal.
Besides his wife Lucy of 55 years he is survived by three daughters and a son. Natalie S. Cash and her husband Thomas F. of Naples, FL., Gwendolyn S. Farrell and her husband William P. Sr. of Milford, Robin L. Tarkhan of Milford and William Townsend of Valparaiso, IN. Twelve grandchildren; Kirsten Hakes, Anthony J. Peleckis III, Elizabeth A. Peleckis, Andrew R. Peleckis, Erica Smith, William P. Farrell Jr. Alexandra L. Tarkhan, Zachary I. Tarkhan and Victoria F. Tarkhan. Brett Townsend, Rebecca Townsend and Ben Townsend. Three great grandchildren; Lindsay M. Hakes, Aidan J. Hakes and Hunter Reed Smith. Bill was predeceased by his brother, Ross B. Townsend.
