William Owen Carpenter, 84, passed away at his home in Franklin after brief illness on Wednesday Oct. 8, 2014. Bill was born August 25, 1930 in Indianapolis to Emmett and Elva E. (Owen) Carpenter.
He graduated from Arsenal Technical High School; class of 1948. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran serving during the Korean War and received a purple heart. Bill married Martha Truman on July 16, 1949 in Indianapolis; they were married for 65 years.
He was employed with Allison Division of General Motors for 39 years as a skilled trades inspector; retiring in 1990. Bill enjoyed living in Florida where he was a member of the Cypress Gardens Lions Club for 20 plus years and was a past president. He was a member and deacon of the Inman Park Baptist Church in Winter Haven, Florida. He was also a former member and deacon of the New Whiteland Baptist Church and a present member of the Friendship Baptist Church in Franklin. Bill served his lord in many ways throughout his life.
He was an Indiana University Basketball, NASCAR, Indianapolis Colts and Pacers fan and loved bowling on various leagues. He was a certified E.M.T. with the New Whiteland Volunteer Fire Department, serving for more than 20 years. Bill loved spending time with his family and was always busy around the house tinkering with electronic equipment.
Survivors include his wife, Martha Carpenter of Franklin, five children, William Owen (Elizabeth) Carpenter Jr. of Nineveh, Tommy (Ruth Ann) Carpenter and Linda Jones both of Whiteland, Michael (Jan) Carpenter and Cathy Carpenter both of Greenwood, 21 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great- grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Richard E. Carpenter, a sister, Virginia L. Weaver, two granddaughters and a great-granddaughter.
