On Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2010, Officer Bill Ayers answered the final roll call.
Ayers, a longtime resident of Arizona and Gila County, worked a range of professions, but always returned to the one he really loved, peace officer. He also proudly served in the U.S. Navy, and was a longtime member of the Elks.
He was born April 20, 1940 in Las Cruces, N.M. to Ralph and Willie (Atwood) Ayers. He had one brother, Richard Gordon Ayers. These three, along with his wife Yvonne, awaited his arrival when he passed peacefully, at home, in Payson.
Mr. Ayers was a beloved husband and father, much respected in the community and by his brothers in blue. He was a motor officer in Globe until he moved to Payson in 1982 and served with the Payson Police Department until his retirement as a DUI enforcement officer.
He was preceded in death by the love of his life, Yvonne, by a mere 30 days. He is survived by their children, Glen and Renee Morse of Winnemucca, Nev., Deborah Morse of Kennewick, Wash., Stan and Allison Morse of Gilbert, Sherri Ayers of Globe, David and Kandace Ayers of Cottonwood, Michael and Cheryl Ayers of Chandler and Steve Ayers of Globe; 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He is dancing with Yvonne beyond the stars. Gone but never forgotten.
